How do drain stoppers work

A push-button sink stopper has only one entire object, which is made of a couple of separate parts that everything is built into even the stopper. All you have to do is push down on the stopper. When the stopper has gone down a certain distance, the clicker comes into effect and clicks the stopper. To release the plug, you again push down until the clicker clicks and releases the plug, so it can rise to a certain height that is not covering the hole.

Many little things could be wrong if your sink stopper is not opening or closing correctly, and that goes for both the pop-up and the push-button stoppers. What you will try and first is clean the mechanisms that the stopper is attached to and again. This goes for both pop-up and push-button stoppers. Both are relatively simple to clean. With the push-button stopper, all you have to do is usually turn the stopper counter-clockwise like a screw, and it should turn out.

Then all you need to do is get steel wire wool or a steel wire brush and scrub it clean. This will usually do the trick. A pop-up stopper has more parts, so what you will have to do is go through each of them one by one. It is best to start at the location where you think the problem is occurring.

All you will need is some steel wool, a little bit of industrial degreaser heavy-duty liquid cleaner, a screwdriver if need be , and a cloth. Some parts will be rusted, will be broken due to wear and tear, and in this case, it is best to replace those parts rather than try and clean and fix them.

We noted that you get traditional stoppers made of rubber and then modern-day stoppers made of stainless steel but have rubber around the edge to seal the hole still. Use locking-jaw pliers to loosen it if necessary. Clean off all hair and debris. If the stopper is broken or its seal looks worn, replace it.

Insert the pivot rod so that it engages the hole in the bottom of the stopper, and tighten on the retaining nut with the stopper in its up position. When the drain is closed, the pivot rod should slope slightly uphill from the clevis to the tailpiece. Retighten the set screw. Move the clip up to the next clevis hole and insert the rod.

You may need to keep tweaking this a little to find the right hole on the clevis. You may also need to replace the gasket or washer or both inside the pivot ball-and-rod assembly. Keeping drains clear of hair, soap and shampoo residue, and other debris is one of the best ways to help keep pop-up stoppers in good working order. This stopper type is somewhat tricky to remove for cleaning, as it must be extracted by pulling it up through the overflow tube and out of the overflow plate. A variation of the type does not use a lever, but rather a twist cover on the overflow plate that rotates left and right to raise and lower the plunger. The drain part of this type of tub stopper looks very much like a bathroom sink pop-up. And it is similar to the trip-lever stopper since it is operated by the same type of lever on the overflow plate.

When the lever moves, the connecting rod linkage in the overflow drainpipe moves also and pivots a rocker arm that connects to the pop-up stopper. At the bottom end of the connecting rod is a spring that presses down against the rocker arm to operate the stopper. This stopper type can also be a little complicated to clean since the stopper and rocker arm must be extracted through the drain opening, and the connecting rod linkage must be extracted up through the overflow pipe and out through the overflow plate.
