He is a Northman and a skin-changer who could transform into a huge black bear. Beorn was a warrior that had great strength. In human form, he was a black-haired man with a great beard. He was tall and had huge arms. He had so many animals on his lands, such as sheep, dogs , and horses.
It was noted that all the animals in his care showed high intelligence. For example, the dogs under his care could walk on their hind legs and carry items using their forelegs. The dogs were able to set the table and speak. His horses were also able to follow Beorn's commands. All this was because Beorn can easily communicate with animals as he speaks the tongue of beasts. The Beornings have been inhabiting Beorn's land for the last centuries of the Third Age as guardians of the Ford of Carrock, fending off attacks from Wargs and Goblins.
The Hobbit, Beorn. At the Carrock. A few years after the Battle of the Five Armies, Beorn became a leader and a great chieftain among the creatures and folk that resided between the Anduin river and the edges of Mirkwood in the Anduin Vales. It was an unpredictable outcome, considering how he preferred living in seclusion.
Beorn's followers were known as the Beornings. Beorn soon had a son named Grimbeorn. Beorn passed away before the events of the War of the Ring. His son Grimbeorn took over his duties as chieftain. Grimbeon became known in Middle-earth History as Grimbeorn the Old. Beorn is known to have high respect for all life forms - except for Wargs and Goblins. This is because they have the tendency to be destructive and evil.
With his knowledge of the tongue of the beasts, he always had a magical and soothing effect on the animals under his care.
Beorn spends his nights patrolling the mountains and the woods as a great black bear. Beorn was known to be incredibly wise and powerful. There was no doubting his durability and strength, whether he may be in his human or bear form. The name "Beorn" was inspired by "beorn," an Old English term for man and warrior. He also wades in to shift the balance of the Battle of Five Armies towards the good side and against the goblins at the very end of the book. He fights in bear shape right through the goblin armies until he reaches the side of wounded Thorin. Before the War of the Ring , Beorn passed away, [3] and his son Grimbeorn took over his duties as chieftain.
The name Beorn originates from an Old English term that means "warrior". Despite being incredibly powerful, Beorn respected all life forms, with the exceptions of Goblins and Wargs, due to their malevolent and destructive tendencies.
He had a magic-like effect on his animals, who seem more intelligent and strong than other animals. He kept bee pastures and spent his nights patrolling the woods and mountains in the form of a bear.
He was wise and powerful, possessing incredible strength and durability, to the point that Azog did not risk facing him even with his band despite his target, Thorin and company, being so close. He was fairly decent, allowing Thorin and Company to stay at his home for a short while, offering sanctuary from the Goblins.
Beorn was also vengeful; when Thorin was fatally wounded in battle Beorn stormed the goblin ranks, rescues Thorin and then returns, destroying the goblins and killing Bolg himself. His appearance in the films is quite different than his description in the book and portrayals in other media. In the films, he has greyish-brown hair, a forked beard, shackles on his left arm, and a mane of hair growing as a ridge down the length of his back.
Beorn mentioned his fellow Shape Shifters , who once lived in the mountains before Azog the Defiler came down from the north and killed or enslaved many of his people for sport. Beorn escaped the terrible fate of his kin explaining the shackles on his arm , and claims that he is the last of his kind. He gives them horses to reach Mirkwood and provides escort to protect them from roaming Orcs.
Beorn appears to be aware of the dark presence in Dol Guldur as he knows of an alliance between the Orcs of Moria and the Necromancer , whom he calls the Sorcerer, in Dol Guldur. Packs of Orcs have been seen gathering in the fortress with their numbers increasing every day. Beorn also knows that the Necromancer is not what he seems to be and that dark and foul things are drawn to his power, not to mention Azog's allegiance to him.
He also heard word spread of the dead rising and walking near the High Fells of Rhudaur. He asked Gandalf if there actually were tombs in those mountains and Gandalf confirms the tombs as Beorn remembered a time when a great evil ruled the lands and had the power to raise the dead.
