Why is evening standard free
The Standard has been producing exceptional journalism since and that is not going to change under my ownership. ES Money. The Escapist. The Reveller. The Optimist. Lebedev's decision immediately throws the spotlight on Associated Newspapers' London Lite, set up as a rival to News International's the London Paper, which closed in September. Many expect that London Lite will now close. The distribution of the Standard will increase from about , to , copies a day.
The London Evening Standard is the first leading quality newspaper to go free and I am sure others will follow. The Evening Standard managing director, Andrew Mullins, admitted that "sustaining a paid-for afternoon newspaper had its challenges even before the freesheets [London Paper and London Lite] were launched in ". Our London reach will be at multiples of the quality national titles and our London classified business will once again have significant scale. The Standard has denied that there will be any immediate redundancies, although it will lose millions of pounds of revenue annually from the decision to drop the 50p cover price.
Should we scroll it? Or download it? Do we click on inset headlines that look like clickbait, rather than journalism? Oh there it goes again, crashing into smartphone oblivion. Just as the FT did a year or so ago, the designers of this digital mess should just own up, put their hands up and completely overhaul the experience.
The lack of functionality means I never now read the newspaper I reported this to ES and they came back and said that they were aware of the problem as they had received other complaints but nothing could be done due to the limitations of the app - here we are fast approaching and they say that there is nothing that they can do, how bad is that. In the meantime I and thousands of others are to be deprived of our favourite newspaper through no fault of our own other than we have vision issues, funny thing is that I thought hatband were supposed to live in a country where all people are supposed to be equal, clearly this is not the case as people with eyesight problems are simply forgotten about.
The ES is a really great paper and is being seriously let down by this inferior App. This app has a huge memory management bug on my iPad 4!
